Dog Tricks -- Cross Paws

Here's a trick you can teach your dog using the clicker and it's not hard at all.

To teach the Cross Paws trick your dog should already know the Down command.

Begin with "Down."

Ask your dog to give you his paw. (Or teach him to give you his paw if he doesn't know how to do this -- see below.)

As your dog starts to give you his paw, move your hand toward his other paw. He should move his paw along with your hand, but if he doesn't, just try again.

Continue.

As your dog starts to give you his paw, move your hand away. His paw will land on his other leg.

CLICK! and treat!

Add the command, "Cross Paws!"

Practice.

If your dog doesn't know how to give you his paw, you can teach him very easily. Hold out your hand and touch your dog's paw. He should lift his paw. CLICK! Hold out your hand again. CLICK! when your dog touches your hand with his paw and treat. Repeat and add the command "Give me your paw" or "Paw" -- whatever you like. Practice. Your dog will probably start trying to give you his paw all the time.
